Warm-hearted Hengshan Police Officer Assisted Foreigners in Distress!
Around 6 pm on the 28th, two foreign backpacking cyclists stopped in front of the police station in Hengshan Township to seek help. The police officer on duty, Officer Lai (賴士鈞), saw them soaked in rain and immediately stepped forward to ask if they needed help. After a while of communication, despite the language barrier, the police officer finally realized that they hope the police station can provide them a shelter to spend the night.
The chief of the Hengshan local police station (周倍寬) decided to assist the two foreign friends to solve their accommodation problem, considering that it was getting dark and the rain had no signs of stopping, and the closest hotel to the police station was still several kilometers away. After further understanding, the two young foreigners are a couple: Guy Tal from Israel and Kamilla Kinard from the United States. They came to Taiwan to cycle around the island for a week, planning to start from Taipei and head south. What is special is that, along the way, they did not plan to stay in hotels; rather, they search for suitable locations and spend the night in a tent. The chief asked them why they do not simply stay in a hotel, and they replied, “Because we like nature!” However, they were unprepared for the freezing cold wave that swept through Taiwan a few days ago, the coldest Taiwan faced in a decade. Yet, they still remarked, “Taiwan is a very nice place!” The police station cleaned up an unused dorm room on the second floor for the couple to settle for the night. During the evening, the chief himself even cooked dumplings for the young travelers and introduced them the culture and cuisine of Hsinchu to let them have a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s culture. The young couple, upon eating the dumplings, remarked, “delicious! Delicious!” Around noon the next day, Guy and Kamilla departed for their next destination. Before leaving, they said that they were very grateful for the warm assistance and said, "Taiwan's Police is very friendly! We love Taiwan!"
The chief of Hengshan police precinct (張益禎) expressed that the Hengshan precinct will help any foreign friends seeking assistance to leave them a good impression and memory of Taiwan. The local police station’s warm and commendable act not only enhanced the public image of the police, but also successfully improved “diplomatic relationships.”
