There was a report that an old man went missing around the Wang Ye Keng (王爺坑) mountain area in Yongxing Village, Cyonglin Township (芎林鄉永興村) around 7 p.m. on 24th November and Chou, Chin-Kui (周錦貴), a sergeant of Siouhu Police Station of Henshan Precinct who was visiting households on his beat was then dispatched to the scene. On the way, Sergeant Chou also contacted an auxiliary police officer surnamed Ho and asked 4 other villagers to come to help.
Sergeant Chou was told that the 80-year-old man who was missing drove to the mountain area close to his former residence to collect herbs and yet hadn't come home even after sunset. His son and son-in-law went there to check; however, they only saw his car was parked by the house and didn’t see him anywhere at all. They became worried and decided to call the police for help.
Sergeant Chou and the rest of the people who came to help decided to divide into several groups to make the search. There were no households and electricity poles around that area so it came to Sergeant Chou’s mind that he could turn on the police light of the police car so that it can be easily seen. The old man’s family and the villagers went upward to the mountain top to search and Sergeant Chou and the auxiliary police officers were searching and shouting along the mountain trails. It was around 8:20 p.m. that they found the old man at a small gorge close to the 4km point of Chu 36th Lane.
It was quite cold in the mountains in the evening in autumn, especially for an old man. Sergeant Chou quickly checked the condition of the old man and found no major injuries. However, the fatigue of being lost in the mountains and several cuts on his left palm had exhausted him. The old man’s wound was quickly treated with bandages and was sent back home before a further examination at the hospital.
The old man explained that he didn’t bring a flashlight with him and he got lost when it was too dark to see the trails clearly in the mountains. Nevertheless it was the police light that he later saw in the total darkness and he was found when he moved towards the light.
The family of the old man expressed their gratitude to Sergeant Chou and the other people for saving his life. Furthermore the Commissioner Huang, Chia-Lu (黃嘉祿) of Hsinchu County Police Bureau came to praise Sergeant Chou in recognition of his quick thinking.
